Ultimate Anti-Mosquito Protocol for Your Home
Mosquitoes are the bane of everyone’s existence especially in the summer months, when they breed and start collecting in every puddle, as if enjoying the water splashing around just like a scene from the TV series Baywatch. But these nasty flying insects ‘Mosquitoes’ can cause diseases like malaria and are a common cause of rashes and allergies, and can be carriers of various infections.
Every Canadian homeowner needs to have a few techniques up their sleeve to ward off mosquitoes by creating an inhospitable or toxic environment for them to multiply. Mind you, we are talking past the point of heading out to Iona Plaza Metro in Mississauga or Strathbarton Mall FreshCo Hamilton just to buy a mosquito killer spray.
Mosquitoes are members of a group of about 3,500 species of small flies within the family Culicidae. The word “mosquito” is Spanish for “little fly” and some people just call them mosqiuto or Mozzies. Mosquitoes have a slender segmented body, one pair of wings, one pair of halteres, three pairs of long hair-like legs, and elongated mouthparts.
No Entry for Mozzies
Invest time and effort to make sure you have adequately sealed up your home in the summer months. That includes having a fly screen on doors and windows that are frequently used as well as disinfecting and cleaning out vents or other smaller areas where mosquitoes can gain entry.
In many parts of the world, a mosquito mat hanging over the bed is still a thing! Hence you can imagine the seriousness to human health.
If you don’t want to go as extreme as that, make sure you keep doors and windows closed as much as possible, and particularly seal up openings and cracks around the property. Mosquitoes are most active at night, so it’s better to be super careful of them gaining entry during the night. If you can, use an air conditioner (or air purifier) instead of opening the windows without flyscreen for fresh air.
It is also useful to install mosquito repellants near all major entryways as well as where you spend most of your time. Remember mosquitoes can hide in corners so spray all four corners of a room at least once a day during peak season. If you are concerned about nightly attacks, using a mosquito repellant skin spray may be ideal. For outdoors, you can use an electric repellant or use repellant coils if you are concerned about your garden being a major breeding ground for them.
Stop The Cycle
Mosquitoes are amongst the fastest breeders out of all pests, so you can stop the problem at the source by employing some tactics to make sure they don’t settle around your Ontario property. Firstly make sure you have no standing water or puddles anywhere in the garden or around the house. This applies to faulty plumbing, leakages, and drain blockages as well. Remember to clean out the garbage at least twice a day as gutters and disposal bins are another breeding place for mosquitoes.
If you keep potted plants use a spray or sprinkler to water them instead of leaving standing water inside the pots. Plants like cactus or other varieties that require little water are a great choice for some indoor greenery. If you have a hot tub or a pool, that also needs to be cleaned out regularly, and always keep repellant devices nearby so the water around the property does not attract mosquitoes, because this one factor can really cause devastating mosquito outbreaks.
Water Sources of Any Kind
When was the last time you’ve checked for any accumulated rain on the roof or gutters before summer season? Most homeowners neglect this very important home inspection for pests believing certain seasons doesn’t call for it. And yet, mosquitoes rely on puddles of water for breeding and the roof and gutters usually accumulate rainwater for extended periods of time before drying.
Investing in a rainwater storage vessel or tank to mitigate the threat is worth considering when it comes to controlling pests and mosquitoes. Periodically checking the plumbing or having a professional home inspection conducted can also help keep your home mosquito-free. Make sure to check for blockages in pipes, to make sure water tanks are sealed shut, and that your garden or backyard does not have mulch piles or wet wood stacks that can provide shelter to mosquitoes.
